The IP Sensor Starter Kit offers an inexpensive Ethernet/WiFi interface for a wide array of Environmental Sensors. It is designed to enable the efficient monitoring of Temperature, Humidity, Barometric Pressure and Light from numerous points through out a facility. The IP Sensor Starter Kit allows the use of industry standard Ethernet or WiFi products (switches, hubs, etc.) to build the backbone of the Environmental sensor / control system. This provides several important benefits:

  1. The easy distribution of sensors over great distances without having to deal with the challenges associated with installing large networks of application specific wiring. By leveraging already existant LAN/WLAN networks, the individual 1-Wire MicroLans can be kept to a smaller physical size, thereby improving responsiveness and decreasing installation costs.
  2. Since the OW-SERVER communicates over standard Ethernet/WiFi, you can take advantage of existing corporate LANs, WLAN, the Internet, and in-house MIS expertise for building out and maintaining the backbone of your sensor network. Ideal applications for the IP Sensor Starter Kit include Server Room Monitoring, SCADA Systems, HVAC, and even Ultra Cold Freezers.
  3. Monitoring of sensor data is possible anywhere an internet connection is available. Removing the need for individuals to collect data on-site simplifies the reporting process.

The IP Sensor Starter Kit is composed of two key components:

  • The Base unit, OW-SERVER, provides the connection between sensors and the Ethernet or WiFi network. Data is available by numerous protocols including HTTP, HTTP Post, SNMP, SNMP Traps and TCP.
  • Environmental Sensors
    • OW-ENV - sensor line features high accuracy temperature, humidity, and barometric pressure sensors; in addition to a light sensor, LED, and pass-through 1-Wire connection.
    • OW-RTD4W - RTD Interface in conjunction with a 4 wire PT100 provides the ability to take extremely accurate readings over a wide temperature -200 to 850°C**.
    • OW-TEMP - Temperature only sensor line is composed of a 12' robust stranded cable with the sensor enclosed in either a stainless steel probe or stainless steel Foil Tape.

The OW-SERVER maintains the latest readings of its sensors with updates of new data every 2 seconds. This provides the quick delivery of current readings without waiting for a time intensive temperature conversion (or other conversion) to be performed. Also, the OW-SERVER is designed to push data when a user defined alarm occurs via SNMP traps. This significantly reduces the necessary polling rate for many applications while still supplying assurance that any problem will be detected in a timely manner.

A number of Ethernet protocols are used by the OW-SERVER including HTTP and SNMP. The HTTP interface is a simple webpage which shows the current overview of each connected sensor. By default, this page uses AJAX techniques to automatically update itself, ensuring the data being displayed is current. The SNMP interface is divided into 3 sections: edsEnterprise, owTrap and owDevices. The edsEnterprise section presents basic product information, such as name and version. The owTrap section is where you define the IP address the trap should be sent, the high alarm, low alarm, and the hysteresis. The owDevices section contains data similar to the Overview and Devices webpage.
